If you are looking for a London luxury hotel then the Ampersand Hotel is a wonderful choice. It is housed in a seven-storey 1881 townhouse and decorated in a slightly eccentric, eclectic yet classy style.
The London luxury hotel underwent a complete face-lift and reopened in 2012. There are 111 rooms and suites decorated according to one of five themes inspired by the nearby museums (V&A, Natural History Museum, Science Museum, Royal Albert Hall) in Kensington.
You could be sleeping in a room inspired by geometry, astronomy, ornithology (birds), music or botany. The rooms are decorated with great flair and use top quality fabrics and fittings. You'll find a large LCD screen TV, free WiFi, and lovely extras like a minibar with complimentary soft drinks and the luxurious toiletries of Miller Harris.
If you choose to stay in one of the hotel suites on the top floors then you'll have floor to ceiling windows, a kitchenette and separate living and sleeping areas. The rooms on the lower levels tend to get a bit noisy so if quiet is very important to you then ask for a room on a higher floor. Visitors can choose from a single room, double room, superior room, deluxe room, deluxe studio or a one bedroom suite.
The public areas are adorned with curiosities and ornaments which give the hotel its unique boutique style. Among the hotel services are 24 concierge and front desk, gym, medical assistance and room service. Room service was quick and efficient and quite tasty too.
There is a luggage storage area, multi-lingual staff, a business center and smoking rooms on request. There is no swimming pool or spa, however the bustling neighbourhood of Kensington has lots of spas nearby. The hotel has a cocktail bar in the vaulted ceiling cellar.
There are two restaurants, Apero which serves Mediterranean cuisine and The Drawing Room which serves all-day coffee, afternoon tea and light meals. Trip Advisor (which is one of the most reliable sources for online travel reviews) gives the Ampersand Hotel top marks for location and cleanliness. 95% of the travelers who reviewed the hotel gave it a "thumbs up."
If you're looking for a luxury boutique hotel which is also friendly and welcoming to families then the Ampersand could be for you. The location is perfect for family oriented attractions like the Science Museum and Natural History Museum. Free baby cots and extra beds (Β£42) are available for those staying in one of the deluxe rooms and higher categories. If you choose a suite you will have your own fully equipped kitchenette.
The hotel can provide babysitting services for a fee. Some of the rooms have interconnecting rooms which are perfect for larger families. The complimentary soft drinks in the mini-bar and tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms are also a plus for families. There are several kid-friendly options on the room service menu.
Small dogs are welcome at the hotel and stay for free but you need to inform the hotel ahead of time. In the Game Room there is a ping pong table, PlayStation, board games and other distractions. There is a library where adults and kids can find holiday reading.
Afternoon tea is served in true luxurious British style, delicate sandwiches and pastries are served on a silver tray with tea or coffee.
Scones with clotted cream and jams make this a truly traditional afternoon tea! Not to be missed!
The Ampersand hotel restaurant can provide gluten-free afternoon tea.
