This contemporary musical set in 1987 tells the story of a small town girl who meets a rocker in an L.A. rock club and the two fall in love. The theme is the pursuit of dreams, the story is fast moving, high-energy and full of 80s clichΓ©s.
The stars of the show are really the 1980s songs which accompany the storyline. Hits by Journey, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison, Bon Jovi and more iconic songs are blended into the story line. The production is light hearted and fun with the cast often addressing the audience directly. The show first premiered in 2005 and came to Broadway in 2011. The show gained even more international acclaim when The Rock of Ages film starring Tom Cruise was released.
Whether this show is suitable for kids is debatable, there are racy costumes, sexual innuendoes and scenes set in a strip club however with the type of content online and in films today kids will probably not blink an eye. Probably best suited for over 12s and each parent should use their discretion. The Rock of Ages plays at the Helen Hayes Theatre at 240 West 44th Street.
